Herbal supplements, miracle drugs and other diet mythologies

26-June 2009

Once upon a time, my mother started drinking a weird-looking concoction. She said it was going to make her thinner, so when she was away, I rummaged through the cupboards to discover what kind of miracle drink could transform gravitationally challenged people into Kate Moss’ look-alikes.

It was then that I first learned about herbal teas, specifically Kankunis, a herbal slimming tea that can supposedly aid digestion, especially if you experience constipation all the time.

And so, I nicked a couple of tea bags, brewed it, heaped it up with loads of sugar to mask its taste (we’re not really a tea-drinking people in the Philippines) and then I waited for my body to magically change into a figure worthy of a magazine cover.

But alas, I waited in vain. Instead I started sweating profusely and my tummy started to rumble and hurt so much that I almost didn’t made it to the bathroom. The pain in my tummy was so bad that I must have looked like I was demonically possessed as I gripped the toilet seat whilst I shake my head from side to side and suppress myself from screaming and cussing!

As I grew weaker and my knees trembled, it was then that I realized what karma really means -- never ever steal anything from your mom!
