Xenical and Reductil

25-June 2009

When Xenical was first introduced in the market, there was so much rave about how effective the pill was, so as expected, I was among the many people who rushed to the local drug store and buy it.

It was pretty expensive even then so I only bought a few capsules. It was a good thing that I did because otherwise it could have been a lot of money down the drain, figuratively and literally speaking!

I only took it for a few days so I’m not really sure if it actually works. I remember being grossed out by the effect though and I’m sure many of you have already heard or even experienced how it gives a diarrhoea-like effect -- with a bit of a twist. I am easily gross out so I’d rather not elaborate.

Personally, I would not recommend Xenical, now repackaged/re-branded as Alli, unless you’re the type of person who has no problem going to the toilet every couple of hours and wearing adult diapers!

As for Reductil, I tried this appetite suppressant pill last year after I got so frustrated trying to find pharmacies that still sells Ionamin. Apparently, this was the year that they stopped selling it in the Philippines because I remember being able to still buy them in 2007.

Three other colleagues from my previous work bought it and we all took it at the same time. It proved effective with two of my officemates seeing that they have lost a significant amount of weight after only a month. The other one, on the other hand, decided not to continue taking it because she said it gives her tachycardia and she’s not comfortable with it.

As for me, it didn’t work at all. I reckon it’s because my body has been accustomed to taking higher dosages, i.e., Ionamin, hence Reductil didn’t helped curb my appetite. If anything, I think it even made me binge even more!
